Keep units visible in a CAD handoff

A simple naming convention can prevent an expensive misunderstanding.

State the assumptions

Include units, revision and intended use when sharing a design file. Do not assume that every receiving system or colleague uses the same defaults. A file that opens successfully may still be interpreted incorrectly. Ask the receiving team which format and supporting information they need, then verify the handoff using a known dimension or other agreed check.

Preserve a controlled source

Keep the editable master separate from exported versions and note which export was sent. If a recipient modifies a file, agree on how changes return to the controlled source. Avoid describing an export as current without a revision identifier. Clear units and file status are small pieces of information, but they help the next person know what they are authorised to use and what still requires confirmation.

A practical review checklist

  • State units explicitly.
  • Identify the export revision.
  • Verify a known dimension.
