Define an inspection question

Inspection is more useful when it connects to a requirement.

Identify what must be established

State the feature, requirement and decision the inspection supports. Work with qualified personnel to choose a suitable method and account for the conditions of evaluation. A measurement has meaning within that context; a list of numbers without references may not explain whether the intended requirement has been met. Keep the inspected part and revision identifiable.

Record the method as well as the result

Include the relevant equipment, procedure and limitations in the record. Explain departures from the plan and keep uncertain results visible for review. Do not turn a convenient measurement into evidence for a different untested property. A clear inspection question makes it easier to choose appropriate work and prevents a report from implying broader assurance than the evaluation actually provides.

A practical review checklist

  • Link inspection to a requirement.
  • Identify part and revision.
  • Record the evaluation method.
