Consider packaging during design

The journey between maker and user can reveal overlooked requirements.

Describe the handling path

Discuss how the part will be stored, transported and unpacked. Identify surfaces or features that need protection and explain which aspects remain provisional. Include the people handling the package in the conversation when possible. A part that is easy to manufacture may still be awkward to move or identify, so packaging belongs in the design review rather than only at dispatch.

Evaluate the intended arrangement

Use an appropriate review or test plan developed for the product and journey. Record the package identity alongside the part revision. Consider labelling, retrieval and how the user will safely access the contents. Do not claim transport performance based solely on a neatly packed sample. A thoughtful packaging discussion connects the designed object to the conditions it will actually encounter after manufacture.

A practical review checklist

  • Map the handling journey.
  • Identify vulnerable features.
  • Review package and part together.
