Once your content is written and your theme is installed, you need to make sure your visitors can actually find their way around your website. This is where navigation menus and widgets come into play, serving as the map and signposts of your digital space.
Creating Your First Navigation Menu
A navigation menu is the list of links typically found at the very top of a website. To create one, go to Appearance > Menus (or use the customizer in newer block themes).
-
Give your menu a name (e.g., "Main Header Menu").
-
In the left column, check the boxes for the pages you want to add (like Home, About, Blog, Contact).
-
Click Add to Menu.
-
Drag and drop the menu items to reorder them. You can indent an item underneath another to create a dropdown sub-menu.
-
Under Menu Settings, assign it to the "Primary" location.
-
Click Save Menu.
Understanding WordPress Widgets
Widgets are independent blocks of content that can be placed in specific areas of your theme, most commonly in the sidebar or the footer. They allow you to add features without writing code.
Common uses for widgets include:
-
Displaying a list of your most recent blog posts.
-
Adding a search bar so users can look up topics.
-
Showing social media follow icons.
-
Displaying a brief text biography or newsletter signup box.
In modern WordPress versions, widgets are managed using the standard block editor layout system under Appearance > Widgets. This means you can add any block—images, text, galleries—directly into your footer or sidebar area with complete design control.
